Look different. That’s the point of a headshot. To show who you are. 99% of actors’ headshots look the same. Most actors follow the cattle calls to the same few headshot venues, where they leave with identically looking images. Do it differently. Don’t let your acting career be a walk of the penguins (cute, but they do look all the same). Have the courage to walk
your own line.
Look real. Expressions in most headshots: 1. bewildered 2. stoned 3. submissive smile. Be strong in your own realm. That’s the only thing that really gets across. You do it your way. Convey this strength. Energy. The don’t fuck with me-realism. The ideals of your beliefs. The conviction of your desire. The power of your emotions.
Retouching included. Instead of shelling out another 50 to 100$ per image - retouching is included in the price. Realistic retouching. If you want to look fake, I’m not the photographer for you. Retouching must not be seen. Nor heard. When people start talking about your retouched headshots, your career has a problem. If I want to see bimbos, I take a walk on Rodeo Drive. For character actors, stars, leading men and leading ladies, I go to the movies. If you want to go there, too, I am your man.
disclaimer: who chooses me as his/her photographer agrees that I use his/her photo to present and advertise my work.
I will work specifically with you. The more information you can give me about yourself, the better it is. Bring me photos of actors you love and that show me how you see yourself. Tell me what roles you are striving for, and what you are working on now, and you feel about it. I will give you a personalized image, and adapt the style of the image and its colors to you. I want you to be you, and my whole process is working in this direction. Many photographers promise a “relaxed” shoot, which usually delivers slacker photos. I promise you an inspired shoot.
It’s not about looking cute. You’re an actor/an actress. If you want to be treated as an actor/an actress, you have to impress as an actor/an actress, not as a human puppy. Cute is a dime a dozen. Cute is everywhere. Be tough. Be strong. Laugh. Smirk. Explode with rancor. Hate if you must. Fight. Do you think anybody will choose you for an important role, if you beg smiling into the camera “Pick me! Please! Pick me!”. Think of a headshot as an audition that lasts 1/250th of a second. I’ll help you show that you can create a believable role. That you are capable in your own standing. That you are to be respected. That you are believable. That you can inspire.
I once helped a director cast his low budget movie. We got stacks and stacks of headshots. After a while we couldn’t tell the actors apart. The headshots looked all the same. And the only thing they told us was: those actors were nice people, and good looking. We would have loved it if at least ONE would have stood out by showing one bit of character. None did. None of the headshots gave us any meat to know who that actor was. It was as if the one and same photographer had shot the same three or four people. There’s a solution to this: it’s called style. You must shoot with someone with a unique style. Then you go farther than the usual numbers game lottery of getting an audition. Stand out and dare to show your character.
Cooperation. Between me, the photographer, and you, the actor. I have been in enough acting classes to know that if you want to get a good performance, you need to work with the actor. It’s like directing. It’s chemistry. It’s helping imagination. I have heard of headshot photographers asking their clients to think “This cake tastes wonderful”. Now what kind of shot would you get with that kind of direction? I will work with the kind of roles you are going to play. I will work with you to put you in a real place. I will make you look real and believable. Which will set you apart from the many others. No formulas. All tailored to the personality of your acting talent.
